You can find locally roasted coffee in every corner of the state. Each roaster is a little different than the next, offering not only an array of coffee drinks but some neighborhood flavor as well. From small, cozy shops to sleek modern spaces, dozens of roasters bring some of the world’s finest coffee beans to the Show-Me State.
It’s easy to spot The Roasterie Coffee Company‘s Factory Cafe in Kansas City – just look for the building with the airplane on top. Owner Danny O’Neill picked his first batch of coffee beans while studying abroad in Costa Rica. Fifteen years later, he founded his direct trade coffee company, air roasting the beans in his basement. He now has a roasting facility and seven cafes throughout the area that offer a variety of coffees, tea, bagels, sandwiches, wraps, pastries and other sweet treats.
Messenger Coffee Company prides itself in “carrying the quality of the farm to the people.” The company began in 2013, and its roastery and café launched after four years of relationship-building with other shops and producers. While customers get wide varieties of coffee, pastries and other food, the business plan also included a perk for coffee producers, which receive a cut of sales to help meet their needs. Serving fresh cups in St. Louis since 2013, Blueprint Coffee now operates several coffee bars and its dedicated roasting headquarters. The shop sells various coffees and offers classes to help customers brew the perfect cup for themselves. Classes cover everything from milk steaming and advanced coffee brewing to how coffee is processed from crop to cup.
Kaldi’s Coffee has been roasting beans and brewing coffee in St. Louis and beyond since 1994. Today, the company operates a dozen cafes in the St. Louis area, as well as one in Columbia. In addition to coffee, tea and fruit smoothies, the cafes serve house-made pastries, sandwiches, wraps, salads and quiche.
It’s been almost two decades since two friends with a love of coffee and home roasting launched La Cosecha Coffee Roasters, named for the Spanish words for “the harvest.” While early cups were poured for family and friends, the business has since expanded to include coffee bars, a truck and wholesale service. Look for the company’s district flower bloom logo meant to represent the bloom of a coffee plant.
Located on “The Hill” in St. Louis, Shaw’s Coffee will have you feeling like you’re in Italy, enjoying an espresso and a scone. Sourced from the world’s three major coffee-growing regions – Central and South America, Africa and the Pacific Rim – the beans are dark-roasted in a traditional European style to enhance the coffee’s rich aroma and signature flavor. The shop also serves fruit smoothies, muffins, kolaches, bagels and cannoli made fresh in house.
Springfield
For more than two decades, the Mudhouse in Springfield has been micro-roasting organic coffee beans in small batches. The shop also serves made-from-scratch baked goods, fruit smoothies, and a variety of soups, Buddha bowls and sandwiches. The Mudhouse also has a location in nearby Ozark.
Laurie
After more than two decades serving the Lake area under a different name, Bean Depot Roastery and Coffee Shop still brews the same great flavors in the same spot in Laurie. The full-service coffee shop and roastery touts an inviting atmosphere and cozy, rustic vibes.
Jefferson City
In Jefferson City, Three Story Coffee develops direct-trade relationships with coffee growers throughout the world and partners with other roasters to support farmers in producing high-quality coffee beans. The beans are sourced from a number of regions, including Guatemala, El Salvador, Ethiopia, Burundi and Sumatra.
St. Joseph
Small batch coffee roaster Mokaska Coffee Company is located in St. Joseph, where the original Mokaska Coffee opened its doors in 1884. Unable to survive the Great Depression, the company closed in the 1930s. Decades later, the new Mokaska Coffee Company is carrying on the city’s coffee roasting tradition and operates a full-service coffee shop.
