The State Historical Society of Missouri is the premier research center for the study of Missouri state and local history. Founded in May 1898, SHSMO collects, preserves, and publishes materials that enhance research and supports learning opportunities in the study of Missouri and the Midwest.

Established as the sixth branch of the State Historical Society of Missouri, the Cape Girardeau Research Center is charged with expanding both the study of the southeast region of the state and the preservation of its history.

The center was formed in partnership with Southeast Missouri State University to provide local residents with convenient access to SHSMO resources.
