The Palmyra Heritage Seekers invite everyone to experience the rich heritage represented at several historic sites in the community.
The Marion County Jail was the site of many historic occurrences dating back to the Civil War, including the Palmyra Massacre. The structure served as a federal prison during the war and has been restored to include the sheriff’s family home from the early years and a genealogy room for visitors.
The first log cabin in Palmyra was built in 1818 by Benjamin Vanlandingham, the first non-Native settler in the community. The historic home has been renovated by the Palmyra Heritage Seekers. The log cabin is located in Big Spring Park, and a marker describing the home is located at 300 W. Main Cross St.
