Founded in 1964, Kansas City Repertory Theatre is nearing its golden anniversary as one of the country’s premier regional theatres. Serving as the professional theatre in residence at the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC), the Rep produces mainstage plays and special events at Spencer Theatre on the UMKC campus, located just east of the Country Club Plaza and at Copaken Stage in downtown Kansas City, adjacent to the Power & Light District.
Under the creative leadership of artistic director Eric Rosen, only the fourth artistic director in the theatre’s 47-year history, Kansas City Rep has been nationally recognized for its exceptional and highly creative productions of stage classics, new works and musicals. About the Rep’s production of The Glass Menagerie, The Wall Street Journal theatre critic wrote: “The greatest of all American plays has received a production worthy of its beauty and truth … by Kansas City Repertory Theatre” and included it as number two on its list of the country’s “Best Shows of 2009.”
Venice (the Rep’s hit musical co-written and directed by Rosen) was proclaimed “The Year’s Best Musical” by TIME magazine and honored on their list of “The Top 10 Everything of 2010” – #2 for Plays and Musicals.” Venice is now in preparation for a possible 2012 New York production at The Public Theater, founded by theatre legend Joseph Papp.
Kansas City Rep’s ingenious work is created by more than 250 professional artists, technicians and administrators. Each year Rep productions serve more than 100,000 patrons from a five-state region and the theatre’s Education and Outreach programs engage 10,000 school children from the two-state metropolitan area.
