Historic and Primitive Skills: Making a Longbow

Location: Twin Pines Conservation Education Center
Explore the history of archery in North America from raw material harvest to bow design and performance. Then, using only hand tools and patience, craft your own hickory longbow work of art. We will start on Thursday evening, continue Friday morning, and finish up on Saturday. This program requires stamina and upper arm strength. Having woodworking skills is strongly recommended, but not required. We will provide interested individuals with a registration form and detailed supply list. Lists of references and resources for making future bows on your own will be provided.

Nature printing is the art of creating images of found objects from nature. From ancient times this process has been practiced as an art, a craft, and an aid to scientific study. Participants will learn about the history and techniques of nature printing while creating a wearable work of art or a colorful tote bag using tree leaves, textile inks and recycled fabrics.

Owls are a favorite this time of year. Learn about this fascinating bird and how to use paper mâché to create your own piece of seasonal décor. This is a two-part class and attendance for both sessions is required.

Learn embroidery techniques while also exploring some of the most stunning and unique trees in the beautiful landscapes of Missouri.

This class is a 12-month program that will meet once a month all year long. You will learn simple, but beautiful embroidery techniques as we explore some of the most stunning and unique trees found in the beautiful landscapes of Missouri. By signing up, you are committing to attend all twelve of the monthly sessions so that you will be able to complete all 15 blocks for an entire quilt.
Owl-o-ween

Myths and superstitions abound concerning Halloween and its traditional seasonal icon, the owl. See Barred, Great Horned and Screech owls from the Dickerson Park Zoo and lay those myths and superstitions to rest. The 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. programs are for schools and the 6 p.m. program is for the public. This program is for all age groups and reservations are required.
Wild Edibles

Learn how to cook with wild edibles. We have collected a variety of these food items and will feature persimmons and wild grapes. This class includes a sampling of these tasty treats.
