Historic and Primitive Skills: Making a Longbow

Registration period: October 1 – October 5

Date: Thursday, October 5, 2023, 6 p.m.-Saturday, October 7, 2023, 5 p.m.

Location: Twin Pines Conservation Education Center

Explore the history of archery in North America from raw material harvest to bow design and performance. Then, using only hand tools and patience, craft your own hickory longbow work of art. We will start on Thursday evening, continue Friday morning, and finish up on Saturday.  This program requires stamina and upper arm strength. Having woodworking skills is strongly recommended, but not required. We will provide interested individuals with a registration form and detailed supply list. Lists of references and resources for making future bows on your own will be provided.

 

Nature Art: Nature Printing

Registration period: September 10 – October 14

Date: Saturday, October 14, 2023, 10:30 a.m.-noon and again at 1 p.m.-2:30 p.m.

Location: Twin Pines Conservation Education Center

Nature printing is the art of creating images of found objects from nature. From ancient times this process has been practiced as an art, a craft, and an aid to scientific study. Participants will learn about the history and techniques of nature printing while creating a wearable work of art or a colorful tote bag using tree leaves, textile inks and recycled fabrics.

 

Nature Art:  Paper Mâché

Registration period:  October 6 – October 18

Date:  Wednesday, October 18, 2023, 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. second part on Tuesday, October 24, 2023, 1:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.

Location:  Twin Pines Conservation Education Center

Owls are a favorite this time of year.  Learn about this fascinating bird and how to use paper mâché to create your own piece of seasonal décor. This is a two-part class and attendance for both sessions is required.

 

Nature Art: Pine Needlers (VIRTUAL)

Registration period: September 28 – October 19

Date: Thursday, October 19, 2023, 4 p.m.-5 p.m.

Location: Twin Pines Conservation Education Center

Learn embroidery techniques while also exploring some of the most stunning and unique trees in the beautiful landscapes of Missouri.

 

Nature Art: Pine Needlers                                                                                                

Registration period: September 28- October 19

Date: Thursday, October 19, 2023, 6 p.m.-7 p.m.

Location: Twin Pines Conservation Education Center

This class is a 12-month program that will meet once a month all year long. You will learn simple, but beautiful embroidery techniques as we explore some of the most stunning and unique trees found in the beautiful landscapes of Missouri.  By signing up, you are committing to attend all twelve of the monthly sessions so that you will be able to complete all 15 blocks for an entire quilt.

 

Owl-o-ween 

Registration period:  September 28 – October 26

Date:  Thursday, October 26, 2023, 6 p.m.-7 p.m.

Location:  Twin Pines Conservation Education Center

Myths and superstitions abound concerning Halloween and its traditional seasonal icon, the owl. See Barred, Great Horned and Screech owls from the Dickerson Park Zoo and lay those myths and superstitions to rest. The 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. programs are for schools and the 6 p.m. program is for the public. This program is for all age groups and reservations are required.

 

Wild Edibles

Registration period:  October 6 – October 28

Date:  Saturday, October 28, 2023, 10 a.m.-noon

Location:  Twin Pines Conservation Education Center

Learn how to cook with wild edibles.  We have collected a variety of these food items and will feature persimmons and wild grapes.  This class includes a sampling of these tasty treats.
