Come see us at the Recess Inn and Ethel Community Church for fall fun, and get a jump start on your holiday shopping! Our Fall Open House & Makers Market is Saturday, Oct. 18, from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. The drive to and through rural Ethel during the fall is gorgeous. We’re located 10 miles north of New Cambria, off US Highway 36. You can expect:
Makers Market: We are thrilled to welcome area creators to the Inn’s Oral Hawkins Library and the Ethel Community Church’s Fellowship Hall, where visitors will find a variety of handmade items, including arts, crafts, home goods, upcycled items, food items, etc.
Used Book Sale: New this year, we are hosting a large used book sale to benefit our historic preservation efforts, community storytelling and the Ethel Community Food Bank. The more books you buy or food pantry items you donate for the Ethel Community Food Bank, the greater the discount!
- 1 Book = $2 OR canned vegetables, pasta, mac & cheese, rice, cereal, soup, Hamburger Helper
- 3 Books = $5 OR canned meats/tuna, peanut butter, shelf-stable milk, baby food, cooking oil, soap, shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant
- 5 Books = $8 OR milk, eggs, diapers, wipes, formula, feminine products, laundry detergent, toilet paper
- Bring your own bag for an additional 50¢ off.
Throughout the Inn and our lawn, you’ll also find:
- Mini Photo Sessions with MhanksPhotography (sign up for a 10 minute slot here, for $35)
- Live painting demonstration with artist Nyle Gordon from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m.
- Historic Videos, yearbooks, photos, and historic local interest books to peruse
- Recess Inn Showcase, including our upcoming calendar, rates, amenities, rental options, workshop sign-ups, interest forms and merchandise
- 50/50 Raffle, with our half of the funds benefiting the Ethel Community Church Food Bank

Lunch: “School Lunch” and baked goods will be served in the Kitchen and Dining Rooms for up to 50 people, from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Recess Inn Proceeds: Proceeds from this event will go towards the upkeep and historic preservation of this incredible 1909 school building. After tuckpointing (fixing the mortar between bricks), our next project will be repairing window and door casings. We are also working on repairing the old “apartment”, which had water damage. It will be decorated as the Science Room and available for long-term rental. These are our plans for now; of course, there are always maintenance needs that pop up that require more immediate needs.
Our preservation efforts also include documenting histories of our community, and we will continue collecting stories and memorabilia to share.
