Day Tripping – Family Fun on the Farm, Show-Me State Style

September 24, 2018

Every year when the leaves start turning and the air gets crisp, farmers celebrate the harvest. And no matter how long you've been living in town or an urban area, the season pulls us to come back to the farm. Give in to the impulse and experience a taste of farm living with the whole family at Beggs Family Farm in Sikeston.

There is so much to do, see and experience – the day will fly by. In fact, it normally takes at LEAST four hours to do all the authentic farm life activities Beggs provides.

  • Shop for their farm-grown pumpkins, squash and gourds.
  • Take a turn on the Cotton Pick'n Slide, created from an actual farm combine.
  • Explore the rope maze, miner maze and corn maze.
  • Take a selfie or family photo while testing your skill at roping from "horse" back.
  • Mine for "gems."
  • Load the kids onto wooden tractors and the cow train, then cheer them on in the duck races and on the pedal car track.
  • Visit the petting zoo, meet Betsy the Milking Cow.
  • Burn a little energy in the laser and paintball arcades.
  • Build a farm animal – choose from a variety of critters, not just bears, to make your personalized toy.
  • Take a pony or camel ride.

Seriously, there are way too many things to do and stuff to see and goodies to buy to list it all here. The farm is open Sept. 29-Oct. 31, Wednesdays through Saturdays. Check their calendar of events for specific hours of operation.

Add a little extra time to your farm adventure - head 10 minutes down the road to Beggs Berry World – the farm belongs to a relative – to stock up on fresh produce – all kinds of fruits and vegetables – preserves, wines and baked goods. If the kids are still awake, they're sure to scream for Beggs' homemade ice cream.

A day filled with fresh air, homegrown and homemade goodies and tons of family fun – sounds like the perfect harvest celebration to me!
