Visit the site where the nation’s first recorded quick-draw gunfight occurred; it helped solidify James Butler “Wild Bill” Hickok’s reputation as a gunfighter.
A historic marker commemorates the famous 1865 gunfight between Wild Bill and Davis Tutt. The altercation started as a gambling dispute and escalated when Tutt grabbed Hickok’s pocket watch as collateral for a debt. The event ended in Tutt’s death.
Hickok was uninjured. After a three-day trial, he was acquitted of manslaughter by a jury.
Hickok is one of the Old West’s most enduring figures, thanks to his exploits as a soldier, gambler, gunfighter, and lawman.
A plaque includes custom artwork and a description of the circumstances surrounding the duel and markers in the street show where each man stood during the shootout. Located on Park Central Square on Route 66.
