Missouri Veterans Cemetery at Bloomfield
The Missouri Veterans Cemetery at Bloomfield, a place of honor and remembrance, conducted its first interment on September 29, 2003. Nestled on 65 acres of the historically significant and scenic Crowley’s Ridge in the bootheel of Missouri, the cemetery offers a serene final resting place for veterans and their families. With an approximate capacity of 27,000 gravesites, it stands as a lasting tribute to those who have served. The cemetery shares a common entryway with the historical Stars and Stripes military newspaper museum, linking two powerful symbols of military heritage.
Facilities
The cemetery is thoughtfully designed to provide comfort and dignity to visitors and families:
- Administration Building: Includes a reception area and public restrooms for convenience.
- Committal Shelter: An enclosed and heated space used for interment services, featuring two attached columbarium walls with 800 niches for cremains. The shelter, columbarium wall, and flagpole area form a plaza suitable for formal memorial ceremonies.
- Scenic Features: A small lake with a red, white, and blue lit fountain, encircled by a walking path, marks the south end of the cemetery. Grey granite memorial benches are placed throughout for rest and reflection.
- Carillon Tower: Plays a random song hourly, echoing across the rolling grounds, adding a poignant touch to the atmosphere.
Conduct of the Interment Service
The traditional graveside service takes place in the committal shelter, which offers:
- Ample pew seating for immediate family.
- Protection from inclement weather for numerous attendees.
- A podium and public address system for clergy or ceremony speakers.
- A natural plaza area for rendering military honors to veterans.
Following the service, cemetery personnel escort the remains to the assigned plot and complete the interment with care and respect.
