Discover Art in Unexpected Places with the Springfield Art Museum

The Springfield Art Museum, founded in 1928, is the city’s oldest cultural institution and home to a remarkable collection of over 10,000 works of art spanning centuries and cultures. While the Museum’s main facility at 1111 E. Brookside Drive is currently closed for a transformational multi-year renovation and expansion project, art lovers will still find plenty to experience.

Though the galleries are temporarily offline, art remains very much a part of the landscape. Visitors can explore the Museum’s outdoor Hatch Lawn, featuring large-scale artworks displayed across the Museum’s lawn. Free and open to the public, the grounds offer a peaceful space to stroll, picnic, or simply enjoy the blend of art and nature.

While renovations are underway, the Museum’s administrative offices and educational classrooms have relocated downtown to “The Art Study Club,” housed in the historic Wilhoit Building at 431 S. Jefferson, #108. From this hub — and through partnerships with local organizations — select exhibitions, hands-on classes, workshops and community events continue off-site throughout Springfield. Whether it’s a watercolor workshop for adults, a creative playgroup for preschoolers or annual exhibits in community galleries, the Museum remains active, accessible and engaged with the community.

The Springfield Art Museum’s permanent collection includes a wide range of works with a focus on American art from the 18th century to the present. Many of these pieces are available to view online, including 360-degree tours of past exhibitions. Visit sgfmuseum.org/27/Enjoy to explore the collection.

In the meantime, the museum continues its mission to foster creativity, inspire wonder and cultivate a deeper understanding of the human experience through meaningful engagement with art. Whether you’re visiting Springfield for a weekend getaway or exploring your hometown with fresh eyes, we invite you to connect with the museum in new and unexpected ways.

For up-to-date information on events, off-site exhibitions, art classes and family-friendly programs, visit sgfmuseum.org or follow the Springfield Art Museum on social media at @sgfmuseum.
