The History Museum on the Square

Beginning with the region's prehistoric origins, museum displays take the visitor through the earliest settlement of the region, on to the upheaval of the Civil War, and into the period of growth that followed and the late 1950s, when Springfield was named an All-American City. Throughout the year, we develop short-term, rotating exhibits that complement the permanent exhibit and allow us to showcase our unique holdings. The research collection contains more than 30,000 books and documents, including books by area authors, historical reference books, local family papers, deeds and maps. We have more than 20,000 historical photographs, preserving images of Springfield from its beginnings. We require at least two weeks notice for group tours.
