The Missouri State Penitentiary (MSP) opened in 1836 along the banks of the Missouri River in Jefferson City, Missouri, the state capital. The prison housed inmates for 168 years and was the oldest continually operating prison west of the Mississippi until it was decommissioned in 2004.
Visitors can choose to take a history, ghost or photography tour, and will walk through several incredibly historic housing units, the vast upper yard of the property and the gas chamber, where 40 men and women were executed.
Also available are paranormal investigations where you will hear about the first-hand ghostly sightings at MSP and hunt for paranormal activity. Have a group of students looking for an unforgettable learning experience? All tour types can be adapted for student groups.
Due to the age of the facility, tours are not wheelchair accessible. Visitors may also experience low visibility, damp or wet conditions, uneven ground and stairs. No children younger than 5 permitted.
Visit MissouriPenTours.com for a list and description of available tours. Advanced reservations are required and can be made online or by calling 866.998.6998. Tour season runs March – November, weather permitting.
