Missouri boasts a very bright future – and a downright fascinating past. History comes alive at our state’s many museums. Learn more about the Show-Me State by visiting these fun and interesting places.

Every Tuesday through Saturday, the Cole County Historical Society Museum welcomes visitors. This museum, located across Madison Street from the Governor’s Mansion in Jefferson City, shares many lessons about the history of our state from the era from the Louisiana Territory, through the Civil War, into the 20th century. Step into rooms containing historic artifacts. The extensive Civil War Collection includes flags, weapons, uniforms and gear, plus murals depicting events that took place in Missouri during that momentous time in our nation’s history.

History buffs and train enthusiasts love a trip to the Katy Depot and Railroad Heritage Museum in downtown Sedalia. Be transported to an era when trains were the most popular (and classiest) way to travel. Walk through the historic neighborhood and learn about its heyday as the center of the nation’s cattle transportation industry. Take great photos near the Katy Depot Landmark and in the art garden.

At the Arabia Steamboat Museum, learn about another important form of transportation and the tragedy of the Arabia. This Kansas City museum tells the tale of the great steamboat’s sinking in the Missouri River, in 1865. Recovery teams excavated the Arabia in 1988 and found 200 tons of well preserved cargo, including many pre-Civil War artifacts.  

In St. Louis, the Missouri History Museum houses an impressive permanent collection, as well as many visiting exhibitions. The museum is located in Forest park on the site of the 1904 World's Fair; you can take a trip to the 1904 World’s Fair, courtesy of the museum’s many interesting artifacts. Interactive galleries feature hands-on activities for children.

Discover history of the athletic variety at the 32,000-square-foot Missouri Sports Hall of Fame. Located in Springfield, this homage to great sports heroes delights fans of all ages. Witness amazing moments in Missouri’s sports history; examine sports archives; zoom toward the finish line in the NASCAR simulator; call the plays in the announcer’s booth; take your best swing at a major league pitch.
