Step Up to the Brew Bar
Author: Scott McCullough
In those often mentioned “good ol’ days,” a bar was a bar was a bar. Not so today. The variety of beer halls and brewpubs alone is more than enough to keep you satisfied. Not only are the brews unique, fresh and in abundance, the list of options often includes food, entertainment, lots of TVs, plus an outdoor area to enjoy the weather.

Take, for example, the four locations of the International Tap House: St. Louis-Soulard location; St. Louis-Central West End scene; Chesterfield site; and in Columbia. They have more than 50 beers on tap (the selection changes regularly), plus hundreds of bottles, all representing more than 20 countries. They do not serve food, but you are welcome to take your own or have something delivered. Several TVs, live music and special events fill the schedule.

You can pull up a chair indoors, and you can sit on the covered patio, and you can enjoy the great outdoors from the large terrace right beside the iconic Katy Trail in Augusta. At the Augusta Brew Haus & Bier Garden, pub-style foods and barbecue specialties are served with freshly crafted beer.

In Hermann, step into a revamped tin mill that is more than 100 years old and partake of authentic German style lagers, brewed using barley and hops imported from Germany. Tin Mill Brewing Company is a true German Pub, right down to the Isar Tankards from Munich. Tours of the facility are offered. Sit outdoors and watch the Missouri River drift past. Sandwiches, brats and pizzas are served.

Like nostalgia? Bootleggers Brewery Restaurant, right downtown in Aurora, is a friendly microbrewery, housed in a restored 1888 bank. In fact, the old bank vault is where the beer is brewed. Order a 20-ounce, bone-in ribeye; but start with the fried alligator and finish with the scrumptious bread pudding.

Go to jail in Jefferson City at Prison Brews, a unique brewpub designed to give the feeling of life in the big house (except with beer). The seven beer choices are handcrafted in-house. There is a diverse menu from burgers to steaks, but don't overlook the hand-tossed, brick-oven pizza. Outside, a large covered-patio sits beside two bocce courts. Special events and live music are often on tap (pun intended).

Flat Branch Pub is a perpetual favorite in Columbia since 1994. There is an ever-changing array of hand-crafted, brewed on-site beers, with at least 10 on tap at any time. The full menu (which changes with the seasons) runs the gamut from wood-fired pizza (a house specialty) to burgers, steaks to barbecued ribs and a few surprises. The spacious outdoor patio is a wonderful spot to visit with friends.

Public House Brewing Company, with locations in Rolla and St. James, is an award-winning craft brewery. Enjoy fresh beer, local wines, live music and exciting events. They produce many styles of handcrafted beer, some of which won medals at the Best of Craft Beer Awards in Bend, Oregon. (In Rolla, you are welcome to take your own food or have some delivered; however, St. James has a full kitchen, so no carry-in allowed.)

Bold, unique artisan beers; that’s how Cinder Block Brewery describes their brews. Located in North Kansas City, their taproom is a hub of activity with, as you might guess, beer, music and lots of fun events. They serve no food, but you are welcome to take your own.

In Weston, about 40 minutes north of KC, O'Malley's Pub and Weston Brewing Company is located in the 1840s cellars of the Weston Brewing Company. Brewery tours are offered on Saturdays. There is always a good time to be had, with bands every Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights. Their on-site America-Bowman Restaurant serves Irish and American cuisine.

Brewpubs are a fast-growing segment of the bar and restaurant scene across the country. These are but a few examples of what’s available in Missouri. For a longer list, search Brewery on VisitMO.com; but even that won’t be a complete list, because there are new ones popping up every month. When you find one (or more) you like, share it on our VisitMO Facebook page. Always remember to drink responsibly and have a designated driver.
