The Ken Lanning Golf Center named among best adaptive sports facilities in the U.S.

Top-notch adaptive sports complexes across the country are giving disabled people opportunities like never before and one of the country’s best is found in Jefferson City.

The Ken Lanning Golf Center has been voted one of the Top 10 Best Adaptive Sports Facilities in America by Sports Planning Guide.

The Missouri Junior Golf Foundation built the Ken Lanning Golf Center for children and individuals with disabilities. It is located next to Turkey Creek Golf Center, minutes from downtown Jefferson City (north of the Missouri River bridge). The course is located at 1616 Oilwell Road.

This handicap-accessible golf course provides children and individuals with disabilities the opportunity to learn and enjoy the game of golf by providing them with a course specifically designed to meet their unique needs. The center also is open to the general public.

In its assessment of the Ken Lanning Golf Center, Sports Planning Guide wrote
, “This venue is one of the first of its kind, a totally unique experience. The Ken Lanning Golf Center is a nine-hole course intended to meet the needs of handicapped golfers. Each hole is a par 3, and no hole is longer than 120 yards.

“The land is flat and there are few hazards, making it easier for people in wheelchairs to navigate the terrain. Also aiding in this effort are wheelchair-accessible ramps at every green and an abundance of cart paths around the entire course. The Ken Lanning Golf Center believes golf should be a sport for everyone, and since its opening earlier this year, the venue has allowed people with disabilities the chance to enjoy the game like never before. The course hosts dozens of tournaments and events every year, while a multitude of hotels nearby make it easy to stay overnight in Jefferson City after a round of golf during the day.”

The Golf Center was named after Ken Lanning, a lifelong Rolla native who made perhaps more contributions to junior golf in Missouri than any other individual. Lanning is a member of the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame as well as the Missouri S&T Sports Hall of Fame, a recipient of the Golf Digest national award for contributions to junior golf and was member of the Missouri Golf Association Board of Directors for 31 years.

The Ken Lanning Golf Center is free and open to active military, veterans, anyone with special needs, and children under the age of 15. All others are welcome to play for $10; tee times are not required.
