The scent of barbecue, the sounds of bluegrass, jazz and blues, and the sight of fireworks over the Mississippi and Missouri rivers – these are just a few of the experiences you'll find this summer in the Show-Me State. Music, history, food and fun await at dozens of festivals and events throughout the state.

Northeast

A Hannibal tradition for more than 60 years, National Tom Sawyer Days, July 2-4, is steeped in Mark Twain lore with the National Fence Painting Contest, a frog-jump competition and the Tom & Becky Contest. Other attractions include a mud volleyball tournament, carnival rides, live music and a fireworks display over the Mississippi River on the 4th of July.

More than 30 jazz musicians will gather in wine country for the Wine and Jazz Festival Aug. 27-29 in Hermann. The festival will feature free concerts at the city's outdoor amphitheater. Sample award-winning wines on the Hermann Wine Trail.

Central

Celebrate the Show-Me State's bicentennial on Missouri Statehood Day Aug. 10 at the State Capitol in Jefferson City. The event will include historical exhibits and an ice cream social. Explore the new Bicentennial Bridge, set to open in August. The pedestrian and bicycle bridge will connect Jefferson City to Adrian's Island, restoring the city's historic relationship to the Missouri River.

The Missouri State Fair, Aug. 12-22 in Sedalia, has showcased the Show-Me State since 1901. The fair includes agriculture exhibits and competitions, grandstand concerts, carnival rides, kids entertainment and more. The fair is partnering with the Missouri Bicentennial Alliance and Commission this year to celebrate the state's 200th birthday. Bicentennial exhibits, activities and entertainment will be located throughout the fairgrounds.

Southeast

The Sikeston Jaycee Bootheel Rodeo has been a summer staple in southern Missouri since 1953. Today, it is the premiere Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association competition in the region, bringing nearly 40,000 people to Sikeston annually for rodeo events and concerts. This year's rodeo is set for Aug. 11-14.

Held annually in Ste. Genevieve's National Historic District, the French Heritage Festival, June 12, celebrates 300 years of French culture in Missouri, including the largest concentration of authentic French Colonial architecture in North America. Experience creole music, dance, storytelling, reenactments, promenades, architecture tours and French cuisine.

Northwest

Weston will honor the "Stagecoach King" and founder of the McCormick Distilling Company during Ben Holladay Day June 5 in Weston. The event will feature a parade, stagecoach, beard contest, Buffalo Soldiers and live entertainment.

Kansas City will join more than 1,000 cities around the world for Make Music on June 21. Launched in 1982 in France as the Fête de la Musique, the event is now held in more than in 120 countries. Musicians are invited to share their talents in parks and plazas and on porches throughout the city.

Southwest

Carver Day Celebration, July 10 in Diamond, highlights the life of scientist and educator George Washington Carver. The event, held at the George Washington Carver National Monument, will include guest speakers, exhibits and musical performances.

The Birthplace of Route 66 Festival, Aug. 13-14 in Springfield, celebrates the place where the famous highway got its name. In the spirit of the Mother Road, the parade will feature a lineup of cars, trucks and motorcycle as well as floats, bicycles and performers. Live music, a 6.6K Run and Route 66 exhibits are also planned.
