Summer Festivals in the Show-Me State

June 6, 2019

Summer in Missouri is packed full of festivals and events celebrating food, history, art, music and more. Here's a preview of some of the fun you can find this summer in the Show-Me State.

Sugar Creek residents pay tribute to their ancestral roots during the annual Slavic Festival, June 7-8. Costumed dancers create a colorful backdrop for sampling authentic Slavic food including povitica, kolache, kieflie, kielbasa and more. Entertainment includes folk dancing, games and music.

Held annually in Ste. Genevieve's National Historic District, the Ste. Genevieve French Heritage Festival, June 8, celebrates 300 years of French culture in Missouri, including the largest concentration of authentic French Colonial architecture in North America. Experience creole music, dance, storytelling, reenactments, promenades, architecture tours and French cuisine.

St. Joseph honors jazz musician and native son Coleman Hawkins with concerts, arts and crafts, food and drink during the Coleman Hawkins Jazz Festival. The event will showcase local and national jazz performers June 14-15 in downtown St. Joseph.

Waterfest celebrates Excelsior Springs' famous mineral waters. The event, June 21-22, will include trolley tours of the historic town, a parade, arts and crafts, musical entertainment, a "gravel grinder" bike race, beer garden and fireworks.

The Maker Faire at Kansas City's historic Union Station brings together curious people who are dedicated to learning and sharing what they can do. Described as the Greatest Show (and Tell) on Earth, the event, June 22-23, will feature engineers, scientists, artists and craftsmen in a family friendly showcase of invention, creativity and resourcefulness.

A highlight of the Sweet Corn Festival, June 28-July 4 in East Prairie, is the Tour de Corn – a one-day charity bike ride that attracts more than 1,000 cyclists of all skill levels. The festival features crafts, games, music, pig races and plenty of sweet corn.

Meet Mark Twain's most famous characters during Tom Sawyer Days July 3-6 in Hannibal, which is celebrating its bicentennial this year. Highlights include the National Fence Painting Competition, Tom and Becky contest, a frog jump competition, live music and Fourth of July fireworks over the Mississippi river.

The Birthplace of Route 66 Festival, Aug. 9-10 in Springfield, celebrates the place where the famous highway got its name. In the spirit of the Mother Road, the parade will feature a lineup of cars, trucks and motorcycle as well as floats, bicycles and performers. Live music, a 6.6K Run and Route 66 exhibits are also planned.

The Festival of Nations, Aug. 24-25 in St. Louis, is a multicultural celebration with an international bazaar, dance, music, and arts and crafts. The festival is a collaboration of more than 100 local ethnic and international organizations.

The Art Fair at Queeny Park is one of the longest-running art fairs in the St. Louis region. More than 125 artists from 20 states will display original art during the event, Aug. 30-Sept. 1.
