Spring Into Bloom in the Show-Me State

May 1, 2017

I don't think there is anything more beautiful than Missouri in spring, as she shows off every color of the rainbow and every shade in between. There's even a special day dedicated to such delight. National Public Gardens Day is May 12 and Missouri's botanical gardens are bursting into bloom with special events for that day - and the glorious spring to follow:

Springfield Botanical Gardens

  • May 12: Romance in the Japanese Stroll Garden and opening day of the Butterfly House
  • June 24: 9th Annual Butterfly Festival and the start of the Americana and Roots in the Gardens concert series

Missouri Botanical Gardens - St. Louis

  • May 12: Grapes in the Garden
  • May 13: Iris Society, Daylily Club and North American Rock Garden Society sales
  • May 13-Aug. 13: Garden of Glass: The Art of Craig Mitchell Smith
  • June 3: Green Homes Festival
  • June 10: Carnivorous Plant Society Show and Sale
  • June 24-25: Rose Society of Greater St. Louis Show and Sale

Powell Gardens - Kingsville - Kansas City's botanical garden

  • May 13: World Migratory Bird Day
  • May 13-14: Iris Hill Weekend
  • May 20: Kansas City Cactus and Succulent Society Display and Sale
  • May 30: Memorial Day Concert with Roger Pitts
  • June 3: National Prairie Day

If a quiet ramble through a beautiful garden is more your style than an organized event, don't miss the natural splendor of the Carnahan Memorial Gardens in Jefferson City, The Comanche Acres Iris and Water Gardens in Gower, The Ewing and Muriel Kauffman Memorial Garden in Kansas City, and the Shelter Insurance Gardens in Columbia (their Sunday evening concerts in June and July are a don't-miss).

Many writers have waxed poetic describing spring and flowers. But Robin Williams said it best: "Spring is nature's way of saying 'Let's party!'" Robin Williams was a genius.

Come party with us and enjoy the spectacle!
