Spring Festivals in the Show-Me State

March 4, 2020

Warmer weather is on its way as spring returns to the Show-Me State. Communities throughout Missouri are ready to usher in the season with dozens of special events.

Beautiful Blooms

Powell Gardens unveils a colorful new festival this year. Bloom Fest, April 11-May 10 in Kingsville, will feature more than 100,000 flowering bulbs and whimsical six-foot-tall human head sculptures sporting living, blooming "hairstyles." Children's activities and special events, including the Missouri Life Market Fair and Dog's Day Out, will be offered throughout the festival.

Stroll along the 6-mile Dogwood-Azalea Trail during the Dogwood-Azalea Festival April 16-19 in Charleston. The festival will include historic home tours, a parade, carriage rides, a plant sale, and an arts and crafts bazaar. New in 2020 is Dogwood-Azalea After Dark, featuring a luminaria-lined path, banks of illuminated pink and white blooms, and entertainers performing along the trail.

Flavorful Food

Choose from 75 varieties of tacos, tamales, nachos, Mexican street corn, margaritas and more during the Kansas City Taco Festival May 2-3 at the Power & Light District. You'll also find live music, games and "taco-themed" fun.

Sample awarding-winning smoked meats, admire the motorcycles and enjoy the music at BBQ, Bikes & Blues, April 24-26, in historic downtown Washington, located on bank of the Missouri River. The festival will include a barbecue competition, bike show and vintage market.

Art and Music

The Art Fair at Laumeier, May 8-10, is a St. Louis Mother's Day weekend tradition in St. Louis. The event will showcase the work of 150 juried artists from across the country and offer local food and beverages, hands-on activities for the kids, and live music.

To honor the 100th anniversary of the Women's Suffrage Movement, the Scott Joplin International Ragtime Festival in Sedalia will celebrate the women of ragtime May 27-30 in Sedalia. This year's lineup will feature 11 female musicians performing a variety of compositions. Joplin spent several years in Sedalia where he composed and published the Maple Leaf Rag – considered the most famous piano ragtime tune of all time.

Family Fun

Build a kite (or bring your own) and take your turn at breaking open a piñata at the Cherry Blossom Kite and Piñata Festival April 4 in Springfield. The festival is a celebration of spring and culture and honors Springfield's sister cities – Isesaki, Japan, and Tlaquepaque, Mexico. Japanese and Mexican entertainment and activities are planned. Springfield's Mizumoto Japanese Garden opens for the season with free admission during the festival.

Silver Dollar City will celebrate its 60th anniversary in 2020. The Branson theme park's 60th Jubilee Homecoming Weekend, April 30-May 1, will include performances by favorite Branson entertainers, special concerts and a fireworks display.

Meet your favorite Mark Twain characters at the Twain on Main Festival May 23-24 in Hannibal – boyhood home of Missouri's most famous author. Visit the historic Mississippi River town for arts and crafts, story tellers, street magicians, food and entertainment for the whole family.

These festivals and many more are coming to Missouri in the months ahead. Find a familiar favorite or a new one to explore:
