Celebrate the Holiday Season with Festivals, Tours and Treats

November 13, 2019

Magical main streets, bustling boutiques, musical performances and fresh-baked treats – the sights, sounds and flavors of the season will soon take center stage at dozens of events across Missouri. From small town celebrations to festivals featuring millions of lights, the Show-Me State offers a variety of ways to enjoy the holidays.

Twinkling lights

More than 6.5 million lights and 1,000 decorated trees will set Silver Dollar City aglow during An Old Time Christmas celebration Nov. 2 through Dec. 30. Don't miss the new Joy on Town Square with an 80-foot-tall Christmas tree illuminated with thousands of lights and animated imagery. The Frisco Sing-Along Steam Train, a nightly light parade and Broadway-style stage productions of A Dicken's Christmas Carol and It's a Wonderful Life are just a few of the highlights at the Branson-area theme park.

A flip of a switch on Thanksgiving evening will reveal thousands of jewel-toned lights outlining every dome, tower and window in Kansas City's Country Club Plaza. The Plaza Lights have been a holiday tradition for 90 years in the historic 15-block shopping district. The Nov. 28 lighting ceremony will feature special window displays, horse-drawn carriage rides, carolers and concerts.

Historic sites

Celebrate Christmas on the Farm Dec. 7 at the Watkins Woolen Mill State Historic Site near Lawson, northeast of Kansas City. Walk along lantern-lit pathways to the Watkins' 1850 Classical Revival style home, where you'll be greeted by the smell of hot cider and the sound of holiday music. Sample plum pudding and other traditional treats and visit with Father Christmas.

Historic St. Louis: A Spirited Holiday Past Dec. 7 will feature 27 historic sites, homes and museums decorated for the holidays. The event includes refreshments as well as musical performances, skits and seasonal activities. Chose from one of 10 themed tours or select specific sites to create your own individualized tour.

Tour more than 30 churches – some over a century old – scattered throughout the countryside during a Christmas Country Church Tour Dec. 12-13 in Perry, Cape Girardeau and Bollinger counties, south of St. Louis. From simple one-room wooden structures to brick-and-mortar masterpieces, the churches will be draped in decorations that reflect each community's heritage and traditions.

Shopping spots

Hermann's German heritage shines during the holiday season with two traditional Christmas markets. You'll find an array of German-inspired crafts, seasonal foods, entertainment and more at Kristkindl Markt, Dec. 7-8 at Stone Hill Winery, and Christkindl Markt, Dec. 12-15 at Hermannhof Winery.

The Albrecht-Kemper Museum in St. Joseph will be transformed into a gift gallery during the Sugarplum Festival Nov. 7-9. Local and regional vendors will offer a variety of art, gift items and decorating ideas.

Songs of the season

The voices of 1,000 children will fill the air with holiday tunes during the annual Christmas on the River celebration Dec. 6 in Parkville. Top off an evening of music, hay rides, and arts and crafts with a fireworks display over the Missouri River.

Hear 500 years of Christmas music during performances at historic churches and downtown venues during the annual Holiday Christmas Festival Dec. 7-8 in Ste. Genevieve. Highlighting the area's French heritage, the festival will also include an art show and sale and open houses at several of the town's historic sites.
