Trip Ideas: Viticulture Wine Trail
Augusta was the first federally designated viticulture area in the United States. The area around Augusta, including the villages of Defiance, Dutzow and Marthasville, encompasses several bed and breakfast inns, boutique shops, a microbrewery and excellent wineries where guests can savor award winning Missouri wines while enjoying a picnic lunch, live music and great views.
Morning

After a peaceful night’s sleep, enjoy a two-course breakfast, followed by a quiet morning on the porch. The circa 1867 cottage and 1885 Victorian house are both decorated with unusual antiques. Each includes sitting rooms, fireplaces and home-baked chocolate cookies. Appetizers are served in the evening; port and chocolates provided for turn down service. They have covered porches and patios, fire pits, fishponds and waterfalls. One of the owners is a European trained chef.

After a complete breakfast, stroll through the rose garden on this 1.3-acre hill overlooking the charming hamlet of Augusta. This circa 1885 “Gone with the Wind” style home includes a balcony overlooking the Missouri River bluffs, offering magnificent views.

is a registered National Historic site. The four-story, circa 1800 home is large even by today's standards, with limestone walls that are two and a half feet thick. The home overlooks the Boonesfield Village, comprised of a dozen 19th century buildings including the Old Peace Chapel, grist mill, schoolhouse and a carpenter’s shop. The buildings offer visitors a glimpse of life as a frontiersman.

one mile east of Augusta, is situated atop a ridge 400 feet above the Missouri River bottoms. Facilities include an expansive outdoor deck under the trees. This is a great spot for lunch and a bottle of award-winning wine. The Klondike Cafe serves lunch daily, April-November, including sandwiches, wraps, salads and pizza. The site provides breathtaking views, a tasting room, gift shop and free Wi-Fi. Live entertainment April-October. No outside alcohol or beverages allowed.

There is entertainment year-round, including live music, wine classes, winemaker dinners and holiday-themed events. is in Dutzow, seven miles west of Augusta, on Route 94. Dutzow is Missouri’s oldest German settlement, established in 1832. Enjoy award-winning, estate-bottled wines, a large outdoor seating area (limited indoor seating), and live music most weekends, spring through fall. Bring a picnic, or buy lunch at the winery. No outside alcohol may be brought onto the premises.

Evening

Settle down for the night at Concord Hill Bed and Breakfast, Marthasville. Dinner service is available to overnight guests, with advance notice. This circa 1900 farmhouse has modern heating, cooling and plumbing. A wraparound porch, complete with porch swing, overlooks the hot tub and deck. The original 1886 smokehouse and a modern-day carriage house complete this idyllic setting with three guestrooms and private baths. A full, hot breakfast is served.
