This marker is at the site of Federal Gen. Samuel R. Curtis’s headquarters in the Harris House Hotel, and is now located in the heart of Westport, across the street from Kelly’s Westport Inn (the oldest structure still standing in Kansas City). It’s located near several shops, bars and restaurants in this eclectic midtown neighborhood.

Oldest surviving brick residence in Kansas City, the Harris House witnessed the Battle of Westport in Oct. 22- 23, 1864. The house was used as the headquarters for Federal forces occupying Westport during the war. Now a museum open to the public, it’s located in the historic district among antique shops and boutiques.

From Westport, follow Broadway, past Mill Creek Park and the J.C. Nichols Fountain, into the Country Club Plaza. Designed in 1922 as the nation's first suburban shopping area, The Plaza is a 15-block district featuring Spanish architecture and European art. More than 150 stores and dozens of eateries make this an ideal dining and entertainment destination.

Follow Ward Parkway before ascending the bluffs on Wornall Road, which rises up from Brush Creek toward what today is Loose Park. This land was purchased by Jacob L. Loose, and his wife, Ella, who donated the 80-acre tract to the people of Kansas City in 1923. Wornall Lane was the scene of fierce cavalry charges between Federals and Confederates on Oct. 23, 1864 during the Battle of Westport. Historical markers now stand depicting the positions of Union and Confederate troops, as well as artillery of the Confederate battery at the south end of the park, along 55th Street at Pennsylvania Avenue.

Traveling south from Loose Park, arrive at the John B. Wornall House, which was struck by artillery shells and used as a field hospital. This beautiful 1858 house has been fully restored.

Forest Hill Cemetery
From Wornall House, head east through the heart of Brookside; this neighborhood surrounds a shopping district built in the 1910s and ‘20s. Turn onto Troost Avenue and climb the hill to Forest Hill Cemetery, site of Gen. Shelby's Last Stand, where a Confederate monument now stands. Gen. Shelby and his troops are buried here.

From Forest Hill Cemetery, head north on Troost Avenue to Meyer Boulevard, then go east on Meyer to the west entrance of Swope Park. Enter the park through the gateway to reach the Battle of Westport Visitor Center and Museum. The historic Visitor Center built in 1903 overlooks the Blue River and nearby Byram’s Ford Battlefield; it tells the story of the events of the Battle of Westport, the largest Civil War battle fought west of the Mississippi.
