This large memorial is dedicated to and lists the names of Howell County, MO residents who have given their lives in defense of our country in WWI & II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. Also at the monument is a small stone sculpture of a cross flanked by a helmet and a pair of combat boots. The cross serves to hold the wreath which is placed annually at the memorial by "Gold Star Mothers" who take part in the Memorial Day Ceremonies.
West Plains historical marker erected in 1958 by the State Historical Society and the State Highway Commission. The marker depicts significant dates in the early history of West Plains and its part in the Civil War. The marker is located on the Ozark Heritage Welcome Center grounds. The marker is available for viewing at all times.
The city of West Plains is proud to honor the area's veterans. The Veterans Memorial located in People's Park, dedicated May 27, 2002, includes all branches of Military Service. A new addition for 2014 is a designated area for Gold Star Mothers. Bricks are placed around the memorial with names of veterans. There is plenty of shade and picnic tables around Memorial for visitors use.
