This area is 4,225 acres of primarily forest habitat. Nearly five miles of the unchannelized Chariton River runs through the area. This portion of the river is known locally as "The Narrows," because the river makes a 2.5 mile loop arond the center of the area. This meandering river channel has created several oxbow lakes and natural marshes along the river, providing unique fish and wildlife habitat. Rebel's Cove Conservation Area contains a heron rookery and is the site of past river otter and ruffed grouse releases. During your visit to Rebel's Cove, you will notice evidence of forest improvement practices, designed to improve tree growth, quality and species composition. This area was acquired partly through the Pittman-Robertson Wildlife Restoration Act, administered through the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
