Ever listen to great jazz in what is rumored to be an 1888 bordello? If not – or if so – the Phoenix Jazz Club in Kansas City should definitely be on your bucket list. In addition to their regular show schedule, the impromptu jam sessions are guaranteed to wow you – no two are ever the same.

For on-the-mark live music, travel to the Gateway to the West – St. Louis. Named one of the “50 Best Music Venues” by St. Louis Magazine, The Firebird hosts a variety of national and local talent. For some good vibes along with an amazing view of downtown St. Louis, stop by Three Sixty Rooftop, an indoor/outdoor nightclub at the top of the Hilton at the Ballpark, across the street from Busch Stadium. Frommer’s named it one the list of "Top Hotel Rooftop Bars Around the World." See why when you enjoy a signature drink, a shared plate and the panorama.  

Why not try an out of the way hot spot? Schindler’s Tavern in Benton, off of Route A, 17 miles southwest of Cape Girardeau, fries up a twist from the standard burger favorite: a bologna-topped burgers with a side of fried green beans. The tavern was selected as one of the country’s “51 Great Burger Joints” by USA Today. Yelp.com reviewer Adam A. says: “Coolest bar in the world! Clay Cooper’s Country Music Express is more than just country music. At the Clay Cooper Theatre, Clay and the expansive cast of veteran entertainers give memorable performances. This Branson venue has a rotating line-up of four shows, plus special events held throughout the year. Before heading to the theater, reserve a spot at Table 22, a restaurant known for its commitment to serving locally raised livestock and locally grown produce – they celebrate you, their patrons, by providing an unforgettable experience. Of TripAdvisor.com reviewers, 86 percent awarded Table 22 a rating of “excellent.”

If comedy is your idea of a great night out, head to Springfield and The Skinny Improv for an evening of hip, cutting-edge and lightning-fast sketches where the audience is often involved. Their Friday and Saturday performances promise some side-splitting laughter. The Skinny, located above (but not affiliated with) Nonna’s Italian Restaurant, received the 2013 award for “Best Place for a Belly Laugh” from 417 Magazine; Nonna’s garnered a “2013 Best Restaurant” award.
