Now that school is back in full swing, family time is more precious than ever. Take a break from those too-crowded schedules and have a short Missouri getaway. Our state offers countless activities everyone loves. This fall in Missouri, enjoy family togetherness.

Uncover your inner artist with a trip to The Clayground, a fantastic paint-it-yourself pottery studio in Osage Beach. Each family member chooses a ceramic piece to paint – The Clayground offers hundreds of pieces, including plates, mugs, kitchen magnets, figurines, coaster sets and other decretive items. Younger artists (or anyone who would just like a bit of help) can choose a paint-by-number piece. Best of all, at the end of the session everyone haves a beautiful, original work of art to take home.

Imagine, create, have fun and learn all at the same time at the Discovery Center of Springfield. Ride their HighWire Bike; visit the BodyWorks exhibit to find out everything about the human body; explore hundreds of exhibits covering the worlds of physics, chemistry, health and culture in this environmentally friendly location.

Kids expend lots of energy – and have tons of fun – at Bounce House Moonwalks, 17 miles north of downtown Kansas City. The perfect destination for kiddos ages two thru twelve, Bounce House Moonwalks provides a wonderland of inflatable obstacles, tubes, and slides.

Satisfy everyone’s sweet tooth with a visit to Central Dairy Ice Cream Shop, in the state capital of Jefferson City. A family favorite since the 1930s, this scrumptious shop treats guests to a vast array of flavors (including Birthday Cake, Chocolate Mousse, and Burgundy Cherry). In addition to classic ice cream cones, Central Dairy serves malts, ice cream sodas, specialty sundaes and gigantic banana splits. Before you go, whet your appetite with this YouTube video celebrating the tradition and the deliciousness of Central Dairy.

How about taking the family to the tenth “friendliest city in America”? In August 2013, the world renowned travel magazine Condé Nast Traveler bestowed that "friendliest" honor upon Branson – known as The Live Music Show Capital of the World. When you spend time enjoying the sounds, sights and shopping, you will see why this great town was included on the "most friendly" list. Delight the kids with a trip to Butterfly Palace and Rainforest Adventure. Visitors to this enchanting rainforest encounter more than 1,000 live, tropical butterflies. Your journey includes the Emerald Forest Mirror Maze; a 3-D movie about the life of butterflies; a trip to the Rainforest Critter Center; and an opportunity to try the Coconut Tree Climb.

Let young imaginations run free at Discovery Playhouse Children’s Museum. This family favorite in Cape Girardeau boasts plenty of kid-pleasing exhibits. Young ones can drive a fire truck; guide their fishing boat across Pollywog Pond; play in Kim’s Secret Water Garden; learn about money at the bank; shop for supper in the grocery store; and partake of other interesting activities. Top off the fun with a visit to the Downtown Toy Store, which features educational items.

Make (literally) a new best friend at Ted E. Bear’s Toy Factory in Springfield. At this fun shop, children get the unforgettable thrill of being the actual toymaker; they choose the bear’s eye color, softness and ribbons – and take home their new pal.

The Crown Center Complex in Kansas City houses two of Missouri’s most highly popular destinations: Sea Life Kansas City Aquarium and Legoland Discovery Center. Open for a little more than a year, the Aquarium and Legoland have welcomed more than one million guests. When you visit, you’ll quickly see why these places are so popular. More than 5,000 sea creatures – from starfish to seahorses to rays – call Sea Life Kansas City Aquarium home. Get up close in the 180-degree, below water tunnel; experience the touch-pool; enjoy informative presentations and feed shows. Inside the amazing Legoland Discovery Center (featuring more than two million Lego bricks), kids have a blast at the many interactive play areas.
