Uncertain of imminent British attack, men were conscripted to form a militia to bolster the Fort's defenses, while the soldiers stationed at the Fort prepared for battle.
Complete with musket and cannon demonstrations, this important, but largely forgotten, saga is brought vividly to life at Fort Osage.
At Memorial Cemetery, hear the story of a U.S. senator who has been buried three times; learn about a Civil War colonel who died at the battle of Shiloh; and meet a modern day spirit of Missouri’s first U.S. representative. Learn about the well-to-do and the not-so-well-to-do from Ste. Genevieve’s history before 1880. This family friendly living history program provides visitors with an intimate look into the lifestyles and happeningsduring the 18th and 19th centuries in Missouri’s oldest town.
Memorial Cemetery, established in 1787, includes the tombs and grave markers of the area’s earliest French pioneers, European emigrants, African slaves and freemen, American Indians and a mass grave of victims of a steamboat explosion. Tour the cemetery using lantern light and chat “face to face” with spirits clad in traditional dress. It is a hauntingly good time. This event benefits the Memorial Cemetery restoration efforts.
Admission: $7; ages 6-18, $3; age 5 and younger, free.
