Jiggle Jam Family Music Festival

Jiggle Jam Family Music Festival is the largest family music festival in the Midwest, recognized by publications throughout the nation. It has become “the destination” for family fun over Memorial Day weekend, with more than 30,000 people in attendance.

The fifth annual Jiggle Jam Family Music Fest giggles and wiggles and jiggles into downtown Kansas City with one overall goal: to bring generations of families together for a good time.

The festival comes to life at Crown Center Square, with youth-oriented performances on three stages, by national and local bands. Jiggle Jam features educational music, dance, crafts, train rides, musical chairs and exercise workshops.

Children's organizations present interactive activities, and the grounds of Crown Center Square are set up with bubble tents and bouncy toys.

Juneteenth Heritage Festival Celebration

Jefferson City's 2012 Juneteenth Heritage Celebration kicks off June 10, 2 p.m., with the annual Juneteenth Father's Day Awards Banquet , at the Lincoln University Scruggs Student Center. Tickets: $15; younger than 13, $10.

The celebration continues at Lincoln University's Soldiers Memorial Plaza with an Emancipation Program, June 15, 5:30 p.m. This program honors men and women who have served and are serving in the U.S. Armed Forces. The featured speeker is Tuskegee Airmen James Shipley. Following at 7 p.m., the Little Mr. and Little Miss Pageant is held at Lincoln University's Scruggs Student Center. Boys and girls ages 4-9 are eligible.

June 16, 11 a.m., the Juneteenth Heritage Festival takes place at 608 E. Dunklin Street. It features a Juneteenth's Got Talent competition. (Auditions are May 26, May 30, and June 2 at the Coca Cola Community Room, 605 Washington Street.) Entertainment includes Footprints Project, dance groups, DJ Rhonda Harper, a ventriloquist, and other acts.

The festival concludes with the entertainment of jazz musician Lonnie McFadden, 8 p.m., at the Truman Hotel. Tickets are $35. The opening act showcases local artist Glover Brown, and Maggie George-Murray.

North Kansas City’s CentennialFest is a celebration 100 years in the making. Talk about lots to keep you busy: a carnival; a variety of concerts and stage performances; KidZone, with pony rides and a petting zoo; puppet shows; a 5k fun run; farmers market; a firemen’s rodeo; car shows; an art show; food and drink stands; vendors of all types; and fireworks shows.

A featured attraction is the Vietnam Memorial Wall that Heals; open 24 hours each day on the North Kansas City High School football field. This is a half-scale, traveling replica of the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington D.C.

Stroll back to the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s on the historic Bagnell Dam Strip. Enjoy vintage autos, trucks, tractors and equipment; bluegrass, blues, and old-time Ozark music; storytellers; food; crafters; outhouse races; pie eating contest; dog show; bubblegum contest; and other fun activities.

Exhibits and displays depict the construction of Bagnell Dam and that era in the history of the area. Tours given of Bagnell Dam.

Oma and Noma Deegraffenreid were the first local residents to cross the now famous Dam. Every year the Lake of the Ozarks celebrates by throwing a big party, known as the Oma & Noma Heritage Festival.

This lively, funny musical is the most requested by Maples Rep patrons and we are happy to present Cheyenne Nelson (seen on the Maples Rep stage as Patsy Cline, Sister Mary Hubert and a half-a-dozen other roles) as Miss Mona.

The score includes "A Lil' Old Bitty Pissant Country Place," "The Sidestep," "Twenty-four Hours of Lovin," and "Hard Candy Christmas." Our cast will delight you with singing, dancing, and a little hanky-panky, but "there's nothin' dirty goin' on!"

In 1905, using a portion of the proceeds from the 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis, the general assembly appropriated $185,000 to build the Supreme Court Building.

The three-story, red-brick building opened in October 1907. It features French Renaissance architecture, stone pillars at each wing of the front facade, stone trim and a slate roof. Prominent in the lobby is a massive marble staircase.

The building houses the offices of judges; the Supreme Court clerk and the clerk’s staff; two courtrooms; the two-story-high Supreme Court Library, and the office of the state attorney general.

Free, half-hour tours of this historic building are available during most business days. Tour times fill quickly, so please schedule your tour well in advance. Closed Saturdays, Sundays and state holidays.

Constructed in 1858 as a luxury hotel, the building has been a hotel three times; a girls college twice; the Union Army Provost Marshal's office during the Civil War; the headquarters for the Pony Express; and a shirt factory.

"Wild Bill" Hickok Shootout Site

See the site where the nation's first recorded shootout occurred and helped solidify the reputation of "Wild Bill" Hickok. A historic marker commemorating the famous 1865 shootout between “Wild Bill” Hickok and Dave Tutt has been installed at the southwest corner of the outer Square sidewalk, near the Park Central Branch Library. The plaque is a 30-by-24-inch piece of engraved aluminum with custom artwork and a description of the circumstances surrounding the duel, which began over a pocketwatch used as collateral for a gambling debt and ended in Tutt’s death. Hickok was uninjured and was acquitted of manslaughter by a jury after a three-day trial. Hickok is one of the Old West’s most enduring figures thanks to his exploits as a soldier, gambler, gunfighter, and lawman.

1855 Harris-Kearney House Museum

Visit Kansas City's oldest remaining brick residence located in historic Westport. The Greek Revival mansion, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, was built by early Westport settlers, John and Henrietta Harris. The house stands prominately on the Battle of Westport Civil War Battlefield. In the fall of 1861, the Harris home was used as headquaters for the Union Army. The dungeon-like cells of the jail housed thousands of prisoners during the bloodiest time in Jackson County's history, including Frank James and William Quantrill. An 1870s schoohouse completes the site. Closed November and January-March.
