Chapungu: Nature, Man and Myth

This remarkable exhibit of contemporary African stone sculpture will showcase more than 40 sculptures drawn from the collection of the Chapungu Sculpture Park of Zimbabwe, Africa. They are the work of three generations of artists, most of whom are Shona. The Shona people are the majority ethnic group in Zimbabwe. They have lived in southern Africa for more than 800 years. Their hand-carved works are made of serpentine, verdite, opal, cobalt and springstone in shades of yellow, brown, red, green and gray. Stone carving workshops, music performances, discovery stations and self-guided evening sculpture tours during complement the exhibit.

BBQ and Blues Festival and Old River Days

The Osage River Bottoms Barbecue and Blues Festival, held at Corner Gardens (317 E. Main), will kick off the weekend on Friday with the Baked Beans Contest at 5 p.m. On Saturday, the barbecue judging is noon-2:30 p.m.; Shannon and The Rhythm Kings perform blues and rock at 8 p.m. At the Drake Harbor Recreational Area, enjoy entertainment by: Cole Camp Good Ol’ Boys; Ozark Country Bluegrass; Wayne Thomas; Cowboy Poet Ken Lorton; Circuit Rider Preacher; Homer May; and maybe a few tunes from everyone’s favorite, Hap Yeager. Introduction to Resident Tribes of Missouri - Bison Hide Painting

American Indian artists will visit Van Meter State Park to paint a symbol on a large bison hide, which is a permanent exhibit in Missouri's American Indian Cultural Center. Each artist represents one of the nine American Indian tribes that lived in Missouri, all of which will eventually use the hide as a canvas to represent their tribe. Traditionally, American Indians would paint symbols and pictures on a hide to record an important event or tell a story about their lives. Each tribal council has approved a simple emblem representing their people and appointed an artist to paint it on the hide. The nine tribes include: Missouria; Osage; Delaware; Ioway; Peoria-Illinois; Kanza; Kickapoo; Shawnee; Sac; and Fox.

Kids Spring Fishing Event at Roaring River

Anglers younger than 16 may obtain a free trout tag at Roaring River State Park. The Missouri Department of Conservation will offer instructions in trout fishing, fish cleaning, and other fish activities. Awards will be given to successful anglers.

The Bull Shoals Field Station of Missouri State University invites you to join in family fun and learning about Missouri Ozark water resources for recreation, household and industrial uses, and natural use. Highlights include: the Fantastic-Fun, River-Run room-size board game; walking aquatic insect key;, water-themed face painting; music; and an art sale. Water quality and environmental groups will be on hand with displays. Route 76 east of Branson, south on Route J to the end of Drury Road, take the gravel road to the Department of Conservation’s Drury Wildlife Conservation Area.
