Go to Prairie State Park to explore the prairie while learning about bison. Take this guided bison hike to see what the prairie has to offer at every time of year.

Prepare for a two-hour hike, perhaps longer, across uneven terrain. Binoculars are useful in looking at bison and other wildlife. Don’t forget your camera.

  • April 5, 10 a.m.-noon: The grass is green and growing, the bison are ready to have their calves, and warmer weather is here! Bring water and snacks. Dress for cool or warm weather, the winds can make a day much cooler than it really is.
  • May 3, 10 a.m.-noon: Calving should be well underway now! We hope to see some on this hike. This should be a great time to get some photos of them and the wildflowers. Bring water, snacks and insect repellent and wear sturdy shoes.
  • June 7, 10 a.m.-noon: Bison babies and wildflowers are plentiful at this time of year! This should be a great time to get some photos of both. Bringing water, snacks, insect repellent, a hat and sunscreen, and wearing sturdy shoes is recommended.
  • July 5, 10 a.m.-noon: Summer is in full swing now. Wildflowers and bison abound! This should be a great time to get some photos of both. Bringing water, snacks, insect repellent, a hat and sunscreen, and wearing sturdy shoes is recommended.
  • Aug. 2, 10 a.m.-noon: The heat of summer has settled in, but it does not bother the bison. Come out on this guided hike to see them in their native habitat. Don't forget your cameras! Be prepared for a two-mile hike over uneven terrain. Bringing water, snacks, insect repellent, a hat and sunscreen, and wearing sturdy shoes is recommended.
  • Sep. 6, 10 a.m.-noon: Fall is nearly upon us and cooler temperatures can't be far off. Enjoy a guided hike to see the bison. Bringing water, snacks, insect repellent, a hat and sunscreen, and wearing sturdy shoes is recommended.
  • Nov. 1, 10 a.m.-noon: Fall is here and the cooler temperatures are great for hiking. Bringing water, snacks, insect repellent, a hat and sunscreen, and wearing sturdy shoes is recommended.
  • Dec. 6, 1 p.m.-3 p.m.: Winter is on its way. Get the jump on it and come out and get see the bison. Bringing water, snacks, insect repellent, a hat and sunscreen, and wearing sturdy shoes is recommended. Dress for the weather; the prairie winds can be rather nasty this time of year.
