This is an annual holiday flower and train show at the Missouri Botanical Garden. Watch G-scale model trains travel through a mountainous, miniature landscape of living plants, small towns and rural dwellings along the Appalachian Trail. Twinkling holiday trees, oversized snowflakes, more than 600 colorful poinsettias and other blooming plants surround the festively detailed scene in the Orthwein Floral Display Hall, lower level of the Ridgway Visitor Center. The Garden closes at 4 p.m. on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve; closed Christmas Day. Admission, $5 in addition to regular garden admission; free for members.

Draft animal teams demonstrate no-gas-needed farming skills and offer wagon rides, as well provide power for corn-grinding and sorghum pressing (weather permitting). The festival includes: molasses cooking; spinning; weaving; natural dyeing; soap making; hand tool woodworking; gourd crafting; rope making; wild-fiber baskets; native plant hikes; children's primitive games and toys; beekeeping; rare livestock breeds on display; dog herding demonstrations; live bluegrass and mountain music. Shrimp harvest day includes complete drainage of the grow-out pond, usually drained by 9 a.m. when sales of the prawns begin. Prawns can be bought to take home; for a fee, we will cook them at our cook shack. Shrimp dinners are available, along with hamburgers, hotdogs, brats, chips, and beverages. Wine and cheese tasting, music, shirt giveaways, and games will be going on through the day. Games include horseshoes, washers, volleyball, checkers, and ring toss. This museum, in a former school, documents the history of Agency, from the 1836 Platte Purchase to the present. After the Platte Purchase, Agency Ford was a thriving community, but, slowly, flooding caused the town to nearly vanish. Open by appointment.

Nearly 7,000 acres of outdoor recreation. More than 30 lakes provide a wide variety of fishing. A number of nature hiking trails dot the area, along with a three-mile trail for hiking and biking. Hunting opportunities are available, depending on the season. A full-service rifle, pistol, trap and skeet range is open Fri.-Mon, 10 a.m.–4 p.m., and Tue., 2 p.m.-8 p.m., for a fee. There is a field archery range. The visitor center features educational displays and naturalist-led programs in aquatic and forest ecology, reptiles, birds, trees. Programs require reservations. Ample picnic facilities include barbecue grills, benches and a covered pavilion. Take I-64; go south on Route 94; then travel 1.5 miles west on Route D. Sites vary from spacious hilltop settings, where one can see for miles while overlooking grazing American Bison, to wooded sites overlooking an eight-acre stocked lake and restored wetlands.
